Rangers In For American Olympic Hero
Maurice Edu, who plays in the midfield for Toronto FC, was a revelation at the Olympics with his inspired performance as a centerback. Against world stars like Holland's Ryan Babel, the U.S. international showed he has the smarts, the physical abilities, and the heart to take on anyone.
Now, according to reports both in Scotland and the United States, Scottish giants Rangers could be ready to take on Edu. The fee is set to be more than $5 million, and the move is pending Edu's obtaining his work permit.
On Friday morning, a source with knowledge of the deal confirmed that the deal was "close" to being done.
A native of Fontana, California, the 22-year-old Edu burst onto the MLS scene last year after being selected number one overall in the 2007 SuperDraft. He was named MLS Rookie of the Year after being one of the few bright spots in TFC's dismal maiden season in the league. He has been capped six times for the full national team, and was called in for next week's 2010 World Cup qualifier against Guatemala.
At Rangers, Edu would join compatriot DaMarcus Beasley, who arrived at Ibrox in 2007. The Glasgow club could be the perfect fit for a composed, versatile player to begin his European career. He has the vision and footskills to play in the midfield and the athleticism and intelligence to play in the back.
No word on when exactly the deal would be completed.
