Bayern's classy win--Bayern 3--0 Fiorentina
MUNICH, October 21 (Champions League) - Fiorentina were guilty of missing a hatful of chances as they slipped to a resounding defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Miroslav Klose got Bayern off to the perfect start as he fired them into the lead in the fourth minute and Bastian Schweinsteiger doubled the hosts' advantage in the 25th minute.
Fiorentina tried valiantly to get back into the match but it was not to be their night as chance after chance went begging before Ze Roberto added a stunning third right at the death.
La Viola are now five points behind Group F leaders Bayern without a victory under their belt.
All the pre-match talk had been whether or not Luca Toni would be fit to face his former club after suffering bruised ribs in Saturday's Bundesliga win at Karlsruhe.
To the Bayern fans' relief he was present in the starting line-up and the Italy striker had an immediate impact.
Toni rose highest to head the ball back into the path of Klose who just beat the offside trap and raced towards goal chased by the hapless Juan Manuel Vargas, who could only watch as the Bayern striker slotted the ball past Viola goalkeeper Sebastian Frey.
The hosts could have been two up with barely five minutes gone as shortly afterwards Ze Roberto raced onto the ball in the penalty area but - much to Fiorentina's relief - the former Brazil winger took too long and the angle grew too tight allowing Frey to make a simple save at his post.
The visitors could have equalised in the ninth minute as Alberto Gilardino released Adrian Mutu who unleashed a fierce shot from just outside the area which flew narrowly wide of the right post.
They went even closer six minutes later as Felipe Melo carved out a real opportunity for his side, racing towards goal and dribbling past several Bayern defenders before letting fly from the edge of the area and forcing a good save from the onrushing Michael Rensing.
However, things went from bad to worse for Fiorentina as they fell further behind in the 25th minute.
A slice of good fortune helped Franck Ribery's pass onto Schweinsteiger who executed a great turn to switch inside before firing low past the despairing dive of Frey.
Fiorentina were desperate to get back into the game and they should have pulled one back before half-time as three minutes before the interval, Mario Alberto Santana unleashed a diagonal effort which sailed past the outstretched leg of Gilardino and brushed the outside of the left post.
Toni should have scored against his old club two minutes after the break but his weak header barely troubled Frey.
Fiorentina simply could not find the back of the net and they had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping them in the match as in the 68th minute Frey pulled off a brilliant save to keep out Martin Demichelis' close-range header.
A minute later Frey was on hand again as Klose squeezed his way past two Fiorentina defenders before attempting to toe-poke the ball home only to be denied by another great save.
The visitors went closest in the 77th minute when Zdravko Kuzmanovic drifted a great cross in to the back post towards the waiting Mutu, who could only watch as his header flashed wide of the right post.
Ze Roberto capped off a wonderful night for his side in the final minute as he dribbled his way towards goal before dropping his shoulder and curling an unstoppable shot into the back of the net from just outside the area.
