Klose and Ribéry to face Nürnberg

There was good news from the Bayern medical unit on Sunday as Franck Ribéry was given the green light to resume training on Monday, and is now expected to make his first appearance of the season in Wednesday’s DFB German Cup second round tie at home to Bavarian rivals 1. FC Nürnberg.

“We’ll watch him closely in training over the next two days and then decide whether to start with him, or whether it would be better to have him on the bench,” head coach Jürgen Klinsmann revealed to fcbayern.de on Sunday morning.

Three month lay-off

Ribéry had originally hoped to feature in Saturday’s Werder Bremen clash, but a hamstring strain forced him to delay his return from a three-month lay-off. The 25-year-old sustained torn ankle ligaments in France’s meeting with Italy at Euro 2008 in mid-June. “We’re all really looking forward to having him back,” commented Klinsmann.

The Bayern coach will also be able to call on Miroslav Klose in the midweek Cup tie. The Germany international was forced to sit out the Bremen match with the after-effects of a dead leg, but is set to resume the squad programme on Monday. As in the case of Ribery, the coaching staff will monitor the striker’s progress before a decision on the starting line-up.

Potential rotation

The day after the sobering home defeat to Bremen, Klinsmann was still pondering the “screw-up" against Bremen. “We’re reviewing whether we ought not to have had a little rotation. You’re always a little wiser after the event,” the Bayern coach said in a TV interview.

Klinsmann made only one change to the team which beat Steaua Bucharest three days earlier, Lukas Podolski replacing the injured Klose. “We have a huge number of games in the next few weeks, so we’re hoping to pick the right players and for everything to work out. A few things didn’t work out yesterday,” Klinsmann reflected. Ribéry’s return provides a potent and classy new option.
